Uncomfortable

Therapy can be uncomfortable. If for a long time it’s just been routine and easy, it may be something worth looking at and maybe needs something to change.

Change isn’t comfortable. Growth tends to happen on that point where comfortable and uncomfortable intersect. Oftentimes that can feel scary like you’re bobbing around in the ocean where waves are pushing you around and you’re feeling a touch uncertain but you can see a glimpse of something in a distance. There’s the taste of the Unknown in the sea air.

There comes a point though which is what happens in therapy that there’s a shift. The energy builds like an ocean wave and the adrenaline, fear and tentative excitement build up. It’s in that moment where it doesn’t feel uncomfortable anymore but as you crest that wave, it feels climactic, freeing and there’s a burst of momentous forward energy; hopeful and bright!

This poem ‘Fear’ by Kahlil Gibran expresses the process of change and transformation beautifully.

Fear

It is said that before entering the sea
a river trembles with fear.

She looks back at the path she has traveled,
from the peaks of the mountains,
the long winding road crossing forests and villages.

And in front of her,
she sees an ocean so vast,
that to enter
there seems nothing more than to disappear forever.

But there is no other way.
The river can not go back.

Nobody can go back.
To go back is impossible in existence.

The river needs to take the risk
of entering the ocean
because only then will fear disappear,
because that’s where the river will know
it’s not about disappearing into the ocean,
but of becoming the ocean.

Allow yourself to open up to all of your uncomfortable emotions, feel your fears. Open up to the process of growth and transform into a stronger, better you.
